Places on Pico: 5 Spots to Hit This Summer

The Wellesbourne Los Angeles

Downtown LA gets a lot of press, but Pico Boulevard is a blossoming area with plenty of hot attractions. From the art and history to shopping and award-winning dining experiences, there’s no shortage of things to see and do here. Check out these five must-visit hotspots.

Museum of Tolerance

The multimedia Museum of Tolerance offers visitors an unforgettable experience that everyone should experience at least once. This “human rights laboratory” and educational center invites visitors to explore the topics of discrimination and prejudice both in history and in today’s society. It features a main museum that focuses on hate speech, racism, and the Holocaust and a separate Anne Frank Museum that’s appropriate for children aged 10 and older. This museum has a ton of exhibits, so to take full advantage of everything it has to offer, plan to spend at least three hours here.

The Wellesbourne

The whimsical 19th-century ambiance at The Wellesbourne restaurant and bar creates a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else. The book-lined walls, fireplace, and leather couches make you feel like you’ve been transported into a magical world of wonder.
The only thing better than the atmosphere here is the first-rate drinks and menu items derived from English classics with an LA twist. With options like bacon-wrapped dates, deviled eggs with bacon jalapeno mousse, and chicken and waffles, this place aims to please and hits the mark. The Wellesbourne is the perfect spot to settle in for a relaxing evening with friends and is also a popular spot for Sunday brunch.

Neat

A dark, intimate neighborhood bar, Neat offers visitors unique craft cocktails with a focus on whiskey and mezcal, as well as a decent selection of wine, beer, and cider. You could literally spend all day trying their unique drink menu items and chatting with the friendly and knowledgeable bartenders.
Neat offers happy hour every day and features live music (mostly rock and funk) every Thursday night starting at 9 p.m. If you’re feeling adventurous, try one of their agave, mezcal, whiskey, bourbon, or scotch flights. There’s no food here, so you’ll want to grab a bite nearby before you dive in!
Matter Studio Gallery
Art fans will love spending some time at Matter Studio Gallery. This dynamic space features a broad range of unique art by local artists, including performance, installation, and mixed media. This beautiful space is full of positive energy. Head over and check out their exhibitions or sign up for one of their inexpensive art classes.

The Upper West

Locally owned and operated restaurant The Upper West is a long-time local favorite. They serve an ever-evolving menu of new-American food. Many of their ingredients are locally sourced from the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market and local farmers including Niman Ranch and Weiser Farms. This bustling, casual, hotspot offers a nightly happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. and an all-night happy hour on Mondays.
Try some of their unique and exciting menu options like the chargrilled octopus, braised lamb crepes, or beef carpaccio. Prefer something a bit more traditional? Go with a classic burger or their signature grilled cheese made with sharp cheddar, goat cheese, blue cheese, and caramelized onions.
